Well, I wanted live rock that was “live” and I’ve certainly got it! On closer inspection of the cured Fiji live rock, there was a fair amount of algae, some rocks had coralline algae and some had green algae I was a bit dubious about as it looked more like nusiance algae than macroalgae. Only one rock had conspicuous critters on it. I shied away from it because the critters looked like worms and the rock was sort of flat and the dimensions were a bit close. I’d gone armed with rubber gloves and a tape measure for the “fishing” expedition in the live rock tub (which was better lit than I remembered, but no direct light).
I kept coming back to that rock with the things growing out of it, though. I ask the girl at the store and she thought they might be polyps of some sort. I dunno…they don’t really look like anything good, but God help me, that’s the rock I got. I wanted a Fiji biotope and for better or worse I’ve got one now.
Cost of cured Fiji Live Rock at LFS: $5.99/lb. I got 2 lbs. Total with tax: $12.97.

Full view of tank to give you an idea of the rock size. The photo on the right is the back of the rock.
Now for a look at the critters that hitchhiked on the rock. At first glance I thought all three were the same. They all look like white worms, with a dark end. On closer inspection, they all three are different (though they could still be the same species…what do I know…I’m a newbie).
Hitchhiker #1 on the back corner of the rock.
Now for a look at Hitchhikers #2 & 3.
The one on the left has the stubby body type of Hitchiker #1, but has “extras”.
The one on the left—Hitchhiker #2—is the most interesting. I really can’t tell what I’m looking at.
Here are some close ups of Hitchhiker #2. (As with all these pictures, clicking on the thumbnail will give you a bigger image):
