Another pathetic lifeform

Meet Cortez! Yes, that’s right I’ve picked up another hermit crab. A small one of the same species, Clibanarius digueti, as the other two. I got him (since I have no idea how to determine gender, I assign it arbitrarily) on Saturday. After spending the afternoon acclimating him I released him into the tank on the substrate at the front where I could get a good picture before he took off exploring. :-) I named him Cortez because this species comes from the Sea of Cortez.

Shortly after adding him to tank I gave him a fish food pellet which he devoured before beginning to explore the tank. :-)

So far he has not come face-to-face with either of the other hermit crabs. Though they’ve been on the same piece of rock or within several inches of each other when I’ve been observing, they have been turned away from each other, on the other side of the rock, etc. I’m a little surprised because when I added Cali to the tank Calypso came over to check her out fairly soon afterward. OTOH, that was a much smaller tank. They could hardly have avoided seeing each other. With the recent addition of the branch rock in the back this tank has even more nooks and crannies for creatures to temporarily disappear into, hidden from sight. These days I spend more time looking for the crabs than I do actually watching them after I’ve found them. It’s like an aquatic version of “Where’s Waldo?”

Now that I’ve got another tiny hermit crab to hunt for, I guess statistically this increases the odds that I’ll find someone. Leave your welcome greetings for Cortez in comments and I’ll pass them along the next time I find him. ;-)

Welcome Cortez! :)

Welcome to the tank, Cortez!

Wassup, Cortez?! Lookin all flashy in that white shell. Holla at me, Crab. ;-)

Cortez has no taste. As you may have noted from a later post he wasted no time trading the spiffy-looking shell for a dinged-up one. He says, “Looks ain’t everything when you gotta wear your house,” and he’s waving a friendly feeler at ya’ll in greeting. :-D
