Sea Creatures and Me has been limping along aimlessly for a while now. I set up the blog initially to log water tests, observations and progress as I attempted my first marine aquarium. I set certain goals for my salt-water experiment and I hit those goals quite a long time ago.
I’d decided to go ahead and get a Fire Shrimp, not wait to see how hurricane season plays out. But my local dealer was mysteriously out of shrimp. I guess he sold the lot, though it’d only been a few weeks since I saw them. In the meantime, a tropical storm has entered the Gulf. […]

Hurricane season began June 1 and runs through the end of November. We’ve had to evacuate twice in the past six years. The first time was shortly before I set up the marine aquarium. I took two freshwater fish with me.
It’s me and the hermit crabs versus the bristleworms and algae. We’ve won this week, but the bristleworms are the algae’s secret weapon. Who would’ve thought? The second batch of hermit crabs have now made significant headway on the spots of algae the first batch couldn’t keep up with.
Right after I wrote the last post, the filter on the aquarium went POP and a curl of smoke came up from it. I dashed across the room, turned off the power at the surge protector, then removed the unit from the tank. I have to admit I was a bit shaken.
Yesterday when I did a water change I also moved one of the rocks. The pretty Discosoma that’s red with purple spots had settled into a deep niche in the center. The problem was that Neomeris has sprouted on the front of the rock just enough to block my view (which wasn’t that great to […]
